"Agricultural landscapes have inspired my work. My background in biology and my love of photography have forged a deep appreciation for the land. The myriad of intricate connections within the biosphere have inspired a deep and abiding understanding of agriculture in our world. Importantly, photography allows me to capture and portray a sampling of the biological events occurring on our picturesque farmlands. The interconnections between humans and the land are vital to the continued survival of life on Planet Earth. Agriculture teaches us how to understand how energy flows and minerals cycle through the biosphere. Looking at an agricultural landscape--it’s difficult not to be excited by the biology. My photography attempts to portray some of the biology/natural beauty I see ---so that others may be inspired to love the land and appreciate the importance of farming."
Matthew Lerman has been photographing nature since he was a little boy. His journey with photography really began when he was about six years old when his dad taught him the basics of developing film and printing photographs. The first picture he developed was an x-ray of his broken toe. Mom and dad encouraged him to take family photos using a box-shaped Kodak point and shoot camera equipped with large and cumbersome magnesium wire-filled flash bulbs. Early on, Matthew realized that beyond those family snap shots existed an awesome and breathtaking natural world. A world filled with wonders infinitely more powerful than family portraits. This realization began to focus and crystallize the young photographer’s vision onto the natural world and before too long, voilà; a photographer-naturalist-biology professor was created.
Matthew has dedicated his life to exploring nature and helping others see the beauty and splendor surrounding us. Professor Lerman spent forty years teaching biology in the NYC area. When he saw the need for a marine biology textbook, he sat down and wrote one. His textbook, Marine Biology: Environment, Diversity, and Ecology (1986), featuring many of his own photographs, was used in colleges and secondary schools throughout the world for over twenty years. In addition, he has been a college professor of biology, marine ecology, oceanography, marine mammalogy, and anatomy-physiology at Kingsborough and CW Post Colleges in New York. His background in biology and love of photography have forged a deep appreciation for the land. The myriad of intricate connections within the biosphere have inspired a deep and abiding understanding of our world. Matthew feels that, importantly, photography allows him to capture and portray a sampling of the biological events occurring. For years he has shared his photographs with his students, now he wishes to share them with you. Philosophy: Matthew's artistic portrayal of nature strives to bring the beauty of the outdoors into focus by capturing fleeting moments and unique compositions.
Matthew’s pictures can be ordered in various sizes. In addition, pictures can be framed and printed on various substrates such as aluminum, canvas, or paper using archival pigment inks.
